It's no secret that the economy is in a spiraling downfall and the gas prices are at an all time high.  It's no secret that jobs are laying off workers, and that the Airlines are merging which will result in more layoffs and higher prices.  It's no secret that the real estate market isn't doing so well and tons of homeowners are foreclosing at alarming rates. 

Well, it's safe to say that the economy is pretty shitty right now and have been for years.
